Cinque Terre’s five colorful villages connected by coastal trails are one of Italy’s most iconic sights, with free swimming spots off the rocks and affordable focaccia from village bakeries to keep food costs down. Wandering the villages themselves costs nothing, though the official cliffside trails between them usually require a paid hiking card and the regional trains link them cheaply. Late spring and early autumn bring warm water with far thinner crowds than midsummer. Basing in nearby Genoa or arriving via Pisa can stretch the budget further than staying in the villages.

Corniglia
Corniglia is the only Cinque Terre village not directly on the sea, perched on a hilltop 100 meters above the water. The Lardarina stairway (382 steps from the train station) is the traditional way up.
Manarola
Manarola is a compact village clinging to a rocky promontory between Riomaggiore and Corniglia. Free to walk.
Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare is the largest and most resort-like of the five Cinque Terre villages, the only one with a proper sandy beach. Free to walk the old town and swim on the free public beach.
Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the five Cinque Terre villages, a stack of colorful houses tumbling down a narrow valley to a tiny harbor. Free to walk.
Vernazza
Vernazza is often called the most beautiful of the five Cinque Terre villages, with a natural harbor, a ruined watchtower, and colorful houses stacked around a small piazza. Free to walk.
