North Macedonia is one of the Balkans’ cheapest countries, with a fascinating mix of Ottoman, Byzantine, and communist heritage packed into a small, easy-to-travel territory. Lake Ohrid alone justifies the trip: the lakeshore and its hillside churches are free to walk, and a swim costs nothing in summer. The capital Skopje adds a free-to-wander old bazaar and riverside statues. Prices throughout the country, from burek breakfasts to long-distance buses, leave plenty of room in any budget. Late spring and early autumn give warm Ohrid days without peak-season rates.
