Hungary is one of Central Europe’s best budget destinations, with thermal baths, rich history, and a food scene built around generous portions at low prices. Vienna and Budapest were the twin capitals of the Habsburg empire, the dynasty that ruled Austria for six centuries, sitting 250 kilometers apart on the Danube and sharing an imperial structure that collapsed in 1918. The tension and connection between them runs through everything from their architectural character to their thermal bath culture.
Debrecen is Hungary's second city on the Great Plain, with a large Reformed church, an affordable thermal bath, and a more local feel than Budapest.
Eger is a charming baroque town in Hungary famous for its castle, thermal baths, and the Valley of the Beautiful Women where local wines cost next to nothing.
Győr sits halfway between Vienna and Budapest at the meeting of the Danube, Rába, and Rábca rivers, and it has one of the densest baroque old towns in Hungary. Most travelers stop here for a single afternoon between capitals, which is enough to walk the pastel old town, climb to the bishop's castle, and decide to stay one more night.
Pécs sits on the southern slope of the Mecsek hills in Hungary and rewards travelers who dig past Budapest. Its UNESCO-listed Early Christian necropolis, its Ottoman-era mosque on the main square, and the Zsolnay ceramics quarter form a compact triangle that can be walked in a day, with university café energy filling the gaps.
Szeged is the sunshine city of Hungary, with a huge cathedral square, famous paprika traditions, and student-driven low prices.
Szentendre is a colorful artist town on the Danube bend, easily reached from Budapest by cheap suburban train and perfect for a half-day budget outing.
