Slovakia is Central Europe’s most affordable mountain country, with the High Tatras offering Alpine scenery at a fraction of Swiss or Austrian prices. Marked hiking trails through the Tatras are free to walk, and exploring the old town and castle hill of the capital Bratislava costs nothing beyond a coffee. The country’s castles, cave systems, and folk traditions make it a rewarding budget detour from the more-visited Czech Republic and Hungary, and shoulder-season visits in late spring or early autumn cut both crowds and prices.

Banska Stiavnica is a UNESCO-listed mining town buried deep in the volcanic hills of central Slovakia, built on silver and gold and largely left alone since the ore ran out. The old town spills down a caldera slope with one of the densest concentrations of Renaissance and Baroque townhouses in the country, and wandering it costs nothing.
Bratislava and Vienna are 60 kilometers apart on the Danube, and for most of their histories they were parts of the same political structure. The Habsburgs, the dynasty that ruled Austria for six centuries, crowned their Hungarian kings in Bratislava's St.
The High Tatras are the smallest alpine mountain range in the world, with free hiking trails, glacial lakes, and mountain hut accommodation at prices that make the Alps look absurd.
Kosice is Slovakia's second city and the cultural capital of the east, far enough from Bratislava that it feels like its own country. The old town runs along a single long square dominated by the Cathedral of St. Elisabeth, Slovakia's largest Gothic church. It was European Capital of Culture in 2013 and the upgrade to the public spaces still shows.
