Antequera is the inland Malaga province city budget travelers reach for when the Costa del Sol gets too expensive. The headline is free: the UNESCO-listed Antequera Dolmens Site, where Dolmen de Menga and Dolmen de Viera count among the largest prehistoric burial chambers in Europe and cost nothing to enter. The Alcazaba of Antequera is a short climb to one of the best free viewpoints in inland Andalusia, and the El Torcal natural park nearby is free to walk through its weathered limestone. Add the Roman Baths of Antequera, a dense set of Renaissance and Baroque churches, and the landmark Pena de los Enamorados rising over the plain, and you have a full day or two without a coastal price tag.
Antequera also makes a cheap, central base. Rail and bus links reach Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Seville, and Ronda, so it works as a low-cost hub for circling the big-name Andalusian cities while sleeping somewhere far less touristed. The town itself stays genuinely Spanish, which keeps food and accommodation honest.
