The Church of El Carmen is the one Antequera church where the interior is the entire point. From the street it is a plain brick former Carmelite church in the upper town, easy to walk past. Inside is a gilded Churrigueresque main altarpiece that fills the whole east wall, one of the best examples of Baroque woodcarving in Andalusia and the reason the building was made a national monument. The plain-shell, gold-inside contrast is what makes it worth the stop.
It fits straight into the hilltop walk. El Carmen sits just below the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor and the Arco de los Gigantes, a short climb down from the free Alcazaba of Antequera viewpoint, with the tilted Pena de los Enamorados visible across the plain from the terraces nearby. The budget catch: unlike the free fortress viewpoint, El Carmen charges a small admission to see the altarpiece. If you only pay to enter one interior in Antequera, this gilded retablo is the strongest candidate. Combine it with the free Alcazaba climb and the open square outside the Church of San Sebastian down in the center for a full day on very little money.
