Plaza Coso Viejo is the central old-town square of Antequera, and it is free to enjoy. On one side stands the Palacio de Najera, the 18th-century palace that holds the city museum and its star Roman bronze, so the square doubles as the front door to Antequera’s main museum. Cafe terraces and church towers ring the open space, which makes it a cheap, easy place to sit and get your bearings.
It works best as a starting point. From here it is a short walk up to the free viewpoint at the Alcazaba of Antequera and the Arco de los Gigantes, or out past the Fuente del Toro fountain toward the free UNESCO Dolmen de Menga and Dolmen de Viera. Anchor your day on the square and most of the old town opens up on foot without a price tag.

Moorish hilltop fortress crowning Antequera, with the Torre del Homenaje keep giving commanding views over the town, the vega plain, and the tilted profile of Pena de los Enamorados. It sits in the same precinct as the Arco de los Gigantes and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor, so the whole oldest part of town folds into one climb.
