The Mirabell Gardens are a baroque garden in the center of Salzburg, famous for the “Do-Re-Mi” scene in The Sound of Music. Free. The view from the gardens toward the Hohensalzburg Fortress across the old town is the postcard image of Salzburg. The Pegasus Fountain, the Dwarf Garden, and the hedge theater are all free. Budget travelers visit in the morning when the gardens are quiet and the light hits the fortress from the east.

The Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is a mountaintop retreat built for Hitler in 1938, perched at 1,834 meters above the Berchtesgaden valley. The building is now a restaurant and viewpoint.

The first baroque cathedral built in the German-speaking world, and the dominant church at the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised here on 28 January 1756. The site has held a cathedral since 774, when Saint Virgil of Salzburg consecrated the first one.
