The Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is a mountaintop retreat built for Hitler in 1938, perched at 1,834 meters above the Berchtesgaden valley. The building is now a restaurant and viewpoint.

The Monchsberg is the wooded ridge above Salzburg’s old town, running from the Hohensalzburg Fortress to the Museum der Moderne. Free to walk. The Monchsberg Lift (cheap) connects the old town to the ridge, but walking up through the Klausentor gate is free. The ridge trail passes viewpoints, beer gardens, and the Museum der Moderne (paid, but the terrace cafe view is free). Budget travelers walk the ridge from end to end and see Salzburg from the angle that the city was designed to be seen from.

Getreidegasse
Salzburg's most famous street and the heart of the Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born at No. 9 (Mozart's Birthplace). The Hagenauer family, the Mozarts' landlord, lived in the same building. The street is known for its medieval wrought-iron guild signs, narrow passages (Durchhäuser), and historic shopfronts.
Hohensalzburg Fortress
One of the largest and best-preserved medieval castle fortresses in Europe, perched on Festungsberg hill above Salzburg's Altstadt. Founded in 1077 by Gebhard von Helfenstein, transformed into a princely residence by Leonhard von Keutschach, and never conquered. The defining landmark of Salzburg's skyline.
Kapuzinerberg
The Kapuzinerberg is Salzburg's right-bank wooded hill, directly across the Salzach from the Altstadt, and the best panoramic viewpoint in the city for visitors willing to walk 15 minutes uphill.
Mirabell Gardens
The formal baroque gardens adjoining Mirabell Palace, freely accessible to all visitors. Franz Anton Danreiter created the definitive layout around 1730. Famous as the location where Julie Andrews performed "Do-Re-Mi" in The Sound of Music. The view toward Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the most photographed scenes in the city.
Salzburg Cathedral
The first baroque cathedral built in the German-speaking world, and the dominant church at the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised here on 28 January 1756. The site has held a cathedral since 774, when Saint Virgil of Salzburg consecrated the first one.
