Hohensalzburg Fortress is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe, perched on the Festungsberg hill above the old town. The funicular ride and interior tours are paid. Walking up the hill is free and takes about 15 minutes. The exterior grounds and the panoramic views from the bastions are free. Budget travelers walk up, enjoy the views, and decide whether the interior ticket justifies the cost.

Salzburg's most famous street and the heart of the Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born at No. 9 (Mozart's Birthplace). The Hagenauer family, the Mozarts' landlord, lived in the same building. The street is known for its medieval wrought-iron guild signs, narrow passages (Durchhäuser), and historic shopfronts.
