Lucerne’s Chapel Bridge, lakefront, and mountain backdrop (Pilatus and Rigi) make it one of Switzerland’s most photogenic cities. Switzerland is expensive, but the best of Lucerne is free: crossing the wooden Chapel Bridge, walking the lakefront promenade, wandering the medieval old town, and seeing the Lion Monument all cost nothing. It is under an hour by train from Zurich, and day-hiking is possible straight from the city.

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke) is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, a 14th-century structure crossing the Reuss River with a water tower at the center and 17th-century paintings under the roof depicting scenes from Swiss history. Free to cross.
The Lake Lucerne waterfront runs from the KKL concert hall (designed by Jean Nouvel, free to enter the lobby) along the lakeside with views of Pilatus and Rigi mountains. Free to walk.
The Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal) is a dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff, commemorating Swiss Guards who died defending the French royal family during the French Revolution. Free.
