Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city, and its best free pleasures undercut its luxury reputation. In summer the public lake and river bathing areas are open to everyone, the old town on both banks of the Limmat is free to wander, and the Bahnhofstrasse costs nothing to walk even if the shops do not. The parks, riverside spots, and lakefront promenade make a cheap day easy to fill. Trains run easily on to Lucerne and Bern, so Zurich works well as a base for a wider Swiss loop. Late spring through early autumn is the window for the lake; expect Swiss prices on anything you actually buy.
