Monument in Lucerne
The Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal) is a dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff, commemorating Swiss Guards who died defending the French royal family during the French Revolution. Free. Mark Twain called it “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.” The monument is in a small park east of the old town. Budget travelers visit for free and stand before a sculpture that has made visitors emotional since 1821.
