Promenade in Lucerne
The Lake Lucerne waterfront runs from the KKL concert hall (designed by Jean Nouvel, free to enter the lobby) along the lakeside with views of Pilatus and Rigi mountains. Free to walk. The Schweizerhofquai promenade and the old town quays are the most pleasant sections. Budget travelers walk the waterfront and see one of the most dramatic lake-and-mountain combinations in the Alps, which costs nothing to look at even in one of the world’s most expensive countries.

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke) is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, a 14th-century structure crossing the Reuss River with a water tower at the center and 17th-century paintings under the roof depicting scenes from Swiss history. Free to cross.
The Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal) is a dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff, commemorating Swiss Guards who died defending the French royal family during the French Revolution. Free.
