The Gothic cathedral at the top of the old town in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and the most unusual thing to see in the city. It is not a finished church but a working construction site: the “Open for Works” guided tours walk visitors through an ongoing restoration that has run for decades, hard hats and scaffolding included. The setting inspired Ken Follett’s novel World Without End, and a statue of the author stands outside, free to see.
The budget angle is simple. The interior is a paid guided visit only, the single way in. The exterior, the Follett statue, and the surrounding free Almendra Medieval old town cost nothing, so it is easy to fold the cathedral into a free walking loop and only pay if the construction-site tour appeals. A few minutes away on foot sit the Painted City Murals, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, the arcaded Los Arquillos, the Church of San Miguel, and El Portalon, while the lower town holds the New Cathedral of Mary Immaculate for a second cathedral without an entrance fee.
