Sibenik’s medieval old town costs nothing to explore: a fully pedestrian maze of polished stone alleys and steep stairways that climbs from the harbor up toward four Venetian fortresses, with the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St. James as its free-to-admire stone centerpiece. As a smaller, less touristed base than nearby Split or Zadar, it tends to run lighter on rooms and meals while sitting only about 15 kilometers from Krka National Park and its travertine waterfalls. Reaching the fortresses and the harborside St. Nicholas defenses on foot keeps a day here close to free, and the central position along the Dalmatian coast makes day trips to Trogir easy and cheap. Travel in shoulder season for the lowest prices and the emptiest alleys.

Sibenik's old town is a hillside labyrinth of stone stairways, narrow passages, and small squares climbing from the waterfront to St Michael's Fortress at the top (paid, cheap, with panoramic views and summer concerts). Free to walk.
The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only cathedral in Europe built entirely of stone without any wood or brick, using interlocking stone plates for the roof and dome. Entry is paid at a modest price.
