Siauliai is a near-free side trip, and the main reason to come costs nothing at all. The Hill of Crosses, 12 kilometers north of town, is an open-air site with no gates and no opening hours, so walking among its 100,000-plus crosses is genuinely free. The city itself rewards a slow walk on a tight budget: the Sun-dial square with its gilded Golden Boy and the offbeat Bicycle Museum are cheap, easy fills, and northern Lithuania in general runs lighter on the wallet than Western Europe. Slot it between Vilnius and Klaipeda, or pair it with Kaunas, since Siauliai sits roughly midway and works best as a stopover rather than a base.

Saulės Laikrodis (Sun Dial Square)
The pedestrian boulevard's focal point features a golden sundial sculpture representing Šiauliai's connection to the sun (the city's name derives from "saulė," meaning sun). Free to visit, the surrounding pedestrian zone is the best area for a low-cost coffee stop.
Šiauliai Cathedral (Ss. Peter and Paul)
The white-towered cathedral dominates the city center's pedestrian boulevard. Entry is free.
