Klaipeda

Klaipeda is one of the rare Baltic ports where the best of the city costs nothing: the half-timbered old town is free to wander on foot, and following the Talking Sculptures route through its cobbled streets turns a walk into a free open-air gallery. The biggest budget trick is the short pedestrian ferry from the old terminal to Smiltyne, which crosses in a few minutes for the price of a snack and lands you within walking reach of the free Baltic sand at Smiltyne and the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit, with the village of Nida a cheap bus ride beyond. Visit in late spring or early autumn shoulder season, when ferries and beaches stay open, the weather still cooperates, and rooms cost far less than the summer cruise-season peak. It pairs naturally with a longer Lithuania loop through Kaunas and Vilnius, both reachable by inexpensive intercity bus or train.
