Vilnius is one of the cheapest EU capitals, and most of its best sights cost nothing. The UNESCO-listed baroque old town, one of Europe’s largest, is free to wander on foot, with the cathedral square, the university courtyards, and the revered chapel at the Gate of Dawn all open without a ticket. Climbing Gediminas Hill for panoramic views over the red rooftops and the Neris river is free, even though entering the tower at the top is not. Cross the river into the Republic of Uzupis, the self-declared artist quarter, where open-air murals and the famous constitution wall can be seen at any hour for nothing. Budget travelers should aim for the last Sunday of any month, when state museums run by the Ministry of Culture, including the Palace of the Grand Dukes and Gediminas Tower, open their doors for free. Gate of Dawn
