Samuel’s Fortress is a 10th-century fortress on the hilltop above Ohrid, built by the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel when Ohrid was the capital of his empire. Entry is a small fee. The walls are walkable and the view from the top covers Lake Ohrid, the old town, and the Albanian mountains across the water. Budget travelers climb to the fortress at sunset and watch the lake turn gold from the highest point in town.
