Ohrid sits on Europe’s oldest and deepest lake, with a medieval old town full of churches and a clifftop fortress whose ramparts give long free views over the water. The lakeside swimming costs nothing and the cobbled old town is free to wander, which keeps a stay here genuinely cheap by Western European standards. It is an easy add-on from Skopje and slots well into a budget Balkans loop. Late spring and early autumn bring warm water without the peak-summer crowds.
