Site of a former southern gate in the old town walls of Caceres, named for the Roman road that ran from here toward Merida (ancient Emerita Augusta). The gate was pulled down in 1751 once its narrow arch became too tight for carriages, so nothing remains to walk through and there is nothing to pay; the name lives on in the street and a small wall niche. To actually see one of the old gates still standing, walk a few minutes to the nearby Arco del Cristo, the one Roman gate of the circuit that survives, or take in the Almohad Wall and the grand Arco de la Estrella on the same free loop of the walls.
