City in Spain

Merida

Also known as Mérida, Augusta Emerita

4 things to see

Merida is a rare thing for budget travelers: an entire Roman city you can wander for free. The most photogenic ruins cost nothing because they sit in open public space, including the Temple of Diana standing in the middle of the old town, the Los Milagros aqueduct on the edge of the centre, and the pedestrian-only Puente Romano, one of the longest surviving Roman bridges in the world, best crossed at sunset. The Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, the definitive Roman collection on the peninsula, is free on Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday, so time your visit to that window and skip the ticket entirely. Spring and autumn bring pleasant weather and a quiet shoulder season, and direct trains from Madrid keep the trip cheap, with Caceres and Trujillo close enough to chain into one low-cost Extremadura loop.
