The 12th-century Almohad defensive wall that rings the old town of Caceres and encloses its entire UNESCO-listed medieval quarter. Surviving stretches of rammed-earth and stone reveal the Moorish layer beneath the later medieval cityscape, and they are free to walk and view from the surrounding streets. Almohad towers like Torre de Bujaco rise from the wall on the Plaza Mayor de Caceres, while gates set into the wall circuit, from the Roman Arco del Cristo to the later Arco de la Estrella, mark its main entrances. Following the ramparts on foot is a free, self-guided way to read the city’s oldest layer.

Arco del Cristo
