Baroque Jesuit church on the Plaza de San Jorge, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the walled old town of Caceres. The twin bell towers and bright white facade are the only white monumental building in a centre of honey-coloured granite, which is why the church ends up in so many photos of the city.
It is used mostly for exhibitions now rather than as a working church, and the real budget draw is the towers. Entry is cheap and the same low ticket includes the climb, where the rooftops and storks’ nests of the medieval quarter spread out below. Prices on the door change, so confirm the current amount on arrival, but reaching the church through the walled quarter is free sightseeing in itself.
It slots into a self-guided loop of the upper town: a short walk down reaches the Plaza Mayor de Caceres, the grand square where cafe life concentrates, and the Jewish Quarter of Caceres, a warren of whitewashed lanes that is free to wander. A full afternoon for the price of one cheap ticket.
