The Plaza Mayor is the open, sloping square at the foot of the UNESCO-listed old town of Caceres, and it is where every visit to the city starts. The upper edge is closed off by the medieval wall and its towers, including the Torre de Bujaco, and the Arco de la Estrella cuts through to lead up into the walled quarter. It is free to enter and free to linger in at any hour, which makes it the natural base for a budget day: arcaded cafes ring the perimeter, the steps and benches cost nothing, and the medieval skyline does the work. Use the square as a free anchor point, take in the towers and the gate at no cost, then pay only for the sights worth it, such as the rooftop view from the Torre de Bujaco. Markets and festivals fill the square through the year, so some days the entertainment is free too.
