It costs nothing to enter and is almost always quiet, so it makes a short, reflective stop rather than a main attraction. The Cathedral of Elvas (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, still called the Se locally) is the dominant building on Praca da Republica and the obvious anchor of the old town.
The Igreja das Dominicas is the most distinctive church in Elvas, an octagonal building tucked just off Praca da Republica behind the Cathedral of Elvas. The plan is the draw: eight slender columns hold up the dome, and the walls are sheathed in patterned tiles, so the interior reads as a single tall drum of colour rather than a long nave.
