The Cathedral of Elvas (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, still called the Se locally) is the dominant building on Praca da Republica and the obvious anchor of the old town.
The Igreja das Dominicas is the most distinctive church in Elvas, an octagonal building tucked just off Praca da Republica behind the Cathedral of Elvas. The plan is the draw: eight slender columns hold up the dome, and the walls are sheathed in patterned tiles, so the interior reads as a single tall drum of colour rather than a long nave.
The largest surviving bulwarked dry-ditch fortification system in the world, and the centrepiece of the UNESCO World Heritage listing that covers the whole garrison town of Elvas. The star-shaped ramparts wrap the old town in a ring of angled bastions, ravelins, and deep dry ditches.
A vast underground cistern dug to keep the garrison in water through long sieges, its rows of vaulted arches mirrored in the still pool below. The space is one of the quietest and most photogenic stops in Elvas, and it shows the engineering side of why this border town became a fortress city.
