The Igreja das Dominicas is the most distinctive church in Elvas. From the street it stays modest, but the interior is octagonal rather than a long nave, with a dome resting on eight slender columns and walls covered in patterned tiles. It is the surviving church of a former Dominican convent and sits a few steps off Praca da Republica, at the back of the Cathedral of Elvas, so budget travelers reach it on the same free walk through the old town. There is no ticket, which is the whole point of an afternoon in Elvas: castle, walls, squares, and churches strung together for nothing after the cheap train from Lisbon toward the border. The church keeps irregular volunteer hours, so an open door is a bonus.

Worth a short pause for budget travelers already walking the old walls, rather than a destination in its own right.
