The largest surviving bulwarked dry-ditch fortification system in the world, and the centrepiece of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the garrison town of Elvas. The star-shaped ramparts wrap the old town in a ring of angled bastions and deep dry ditches, mostly built in the 17th century when Elvas guarded the Spanish border opposite Badajoz.
Walking the walls is free. There is no ticket booth and no fixed hours, just open ramparts with long views over the Alentejo plains toward Spain. It is the best way to understand the town, and it links the other low-cost sights inside the walls: the Castelo de Elvas, the older Muslim Walls of Elvas, the Cathedral of Elvas on Praca da Republica, and the underground Military Cistern of Elvas. Most budget travellers arrive on the train from Lisbon toward Badajoz.

Remnants of a mosque from the Moorish period, traceable along the line of the Muslim Walls of Elvas. A quiet, lesser-known marker of the town's Islamic past, free to view from the street. Worth a short pause for budget travelers already walking the old walls, rather than a destination in its own right.
A small medieval synagogue tucked into the former Jewish Quarter of Elvas, evidence of the town's Sephardic heritage before the Inquisition. One of the few surviving synagogue traces in southern Portugal.

The Casa da Cultura de Elvas is the town's municipal cultural centre, sitting on Praça da República in the heart of the UNESCO-listed fortified town. It hosts rotating exhibitions and local events, and entry is free, which makes it an easy stop while crossing the main square between the Cathedral of Elvas and the climb up to the Castelo de Elvas.
