Villach is a laid-back southern Austrian town near warm swimming lakes, with lower prices than the country’s more famous destinations. The compact old town along the Drau river is free to wander, and the nearby Faaker See and Ossiacher See cost nothing to swim in during summer. As a rail junction it makes a cheap base for day trips into Slovenia and northern Italy, and Klagenfurt and Ossiach are short hops away.

Hauptplatz Villach
Villach's Hauptplatz is an elongated medieval market square in Carinthia's second-largest city, lined with pastel-colored Gothic and Baroque facades and cafe terraces. The Jakob parish church, whose tower you can climb for views over the square and the Drau River, anchors one end.
Nikolaikirche
The Nikolaikirche on Nikolaigasse in Villach's old town is one of the oldest churches in Carinthia, with Romanesque origins in the 13th century. Later Gothic modifications reshaped the interior, but the structure's age is visible in the massive walls and the compressed proportions of the nave.
Villacher Alpe Dobratsch
A 2,166-meter peak in a nature park directly above Villach, with a panoramic road reaching close to the summit. Free hiking trails at the top with views spanning Austria, Italy, and Slovenia on clear days.
