The Nikolaikirche (St Nicholas Church) is where the Monday prayer meetings that sparked the 1989 Peaceful Revolution began, leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Free to enter. The pastel interior is unexpectedly beautiful. A column of palm-shaped pillars outside the church commemorates the revolution. Budget travelers visit for free and stand in the church where ordinary people brought down a dictatorship by refusing to be afraid.
