Klagenfurt sits near the warm Wörthersee, one of the warmest lakes in the Alps, and the city makes a relaxed budget base in Carinthia. The arcaded Renaissance old town around the Alter Platz is free to wander, and the Lindwurm dragon fountain on the Neuer Platz costs nothing to admire. The lakefront and several public bathing spots are reachable by cheap public transport, and summer is busiest while late spring and early autumn are quieter and cheaper. Easy to pair with Velden am Worthersee, Maria Worth, and Villach for a low-cost lake circuit.

Europapark Klagenfurt
The Europapark stretches along the Woerthersee shore in Klagenfurt, containing the Strandbad (the city's main swimming lido), playgrounds, boat rentals, and green space with direct lake access.
Lindwurmbrunnen
The Dragon Fountain on the Neuer Platz, the emblem of Klagenfurt. The legend says the city was founded on a swamp inhabited by a lindworm (dragon). The 16th-century sculpture is carved from a single block of chlorite schist. The fountain is the natural meeting point and photo spot in the city center.
