Vaduz is a capital you can walk end to end in minutes, with a hilltop castle (viewable from outside), free mountain trail access, and the world’s quirkiest passport-stamp souvenir at the tourist office. The whole pedestrian centre and the 20-minute walk up to the castle viewpoint cost nothing, and a short bus from Feldkirch in Austria adds a sovereign country to your trip for the price of a local ticket. Pair it with Feldkirch or Bregenz to keep the day cheap.

Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein (a 160-square-kilometer principality on the Rhine between Austria and Switzerland), gave itself a genuinely ambitious art museum in 2000: a black concrete cube by Morger, Degelo, and Kerez that sits in the center of the small city as an uncompromising architectural statement.
The hilltop trail to the castle of the Liechtenstein royal family is free to walk, and the view over the Rhine Valley from the castle terrace is the best in the country. The castle itself is a private residence and closed to visitors.
The short main street of one of the world's smallest capitals, free to stroll with views up to the castle. Budget travellers can enjoy the public art installations and the novelty of walking through a microstate without spending anything.
