City in Austria

Feldkirch

3 things to see

A medieval town in Vorarlberg near the Liechtenstein and Swiss borders, with one of the most intact old towns in western Austria. Wandering the narrow arcaded streets of the Altstadt and the Schattenburg castle grounds above the town costs nothing, and most of a visit is just walking. It makes a cheap overnight stop between Zurich and Innsbruck on the Arlberg line, and the capital of Liechtenstein, Vaduz, is a short and easy day trip. Quieter and lighter on the wallet outside the December Christmas market crowds, with nearby Bregenz and Bludenz both reachable by regional train.

Katzenturm Feldkirch

The Katzenturm is Feldkirch's most prominent medieval tower, the dominant remnant of the city's 13th and 14th century fortifications that once encircled one of Vorarlberg's most completely preserved medieval town plans. The tower, built in 1491, houses one of the largest bells in Vorarlberg.
