Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein (a 160-square-kilometer principality on the Rhine between Austria and Switzerland), gave itself a genuinely ambitious art museum in 2000: a black concrete cube by Morger, Degelo, and Kerez that sits in the center of the small city as an uncompromising architectural statement.
The hilltop trail to the castle of the Liechtenstein royal family is free to walk, and the view over the Rhine Valley from the castle terrace is the best in the country. The castle itself is a private residence and closed to visitors.
