Trebinje is a sun-drenched southern town with a Mediterranean feel, local wine for next to nothing, and almost no tourist crowds. Wandering the small walled old town and the riverside plane-tree square costs nothing, and the open-air market is cheap for fruit, cheese, and a picnic. It sits close enough to Dubrovnik on the coast and Mostar inland to work as a quiet, far cheaper base than either. Spring and autumn bring warm days without the summer heat.

A Serbian Orthodox monastery and church built in 2000 on Crkvina Hill as a replica of the medieval Gracanica monastery in Kosovo. Free to enter, with commanding views over Trebinje and the surrounding valley.
