Dubrovnik’s walled old town is one of the priciest stops on the Adriatic, but the single best view costs nothing: skip the cable car and hike the steep trail up Mount Srd in about an hour for a panorama over the Old Town, the sea, and the island of Lokrum. Wandering the limestone streets, squares, and harbor inside the walls is free, and you only pay if you choose to walk the ramparts themselves on a one-time ticket. For a free sunset, settle on the cliffs by the outer wall near the Buza spots or look across to Fort Lovrijenac from Gradac Park, both a short walk from the Pile Gate. Banje Beach just outside the Ploce Gate is a free, photogenic perch over the harbor whether or not you swim, and a cheap public ferry crosses to leafy Lokrum island for a botanical garden and quiet coves. Stay outside the walls in Lapad or Gruz where rooms run far cheaper, and travel in the shoulder months of spring or autumn when prices and crowds drop sharply while the weather stays warm. Cavtat to the south and Mostar over the border in Bosnia both make easy, affordable bus day trips.

Buza Bar
Buza Bar is a cliff-side bar outside the southern city walls of Dubrovnik, accessed through a hole in the wall marked by a small sign reading "cold drinks with the most beautiful view." Free to enter (you pay for drinks). The bar is carved into the rocks above the Adriatic, with swimming platforms below and the open sea in front.
Dubrovnik Cable Car Viewpoint
The Dubrovnik Cable Car takes visitors from just outside the old town to the top of Mount Srd in under four minutes. The ticket is paid but the view from the summit is the most complete panorama of the old town, the islands, and the Adriatic coastline.
Dubrovnik City Walls
The city walls of Dubrovnik form a 2-kilometer loop around the old town, with towers, bastions, and views down to the terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. Entry is paid and one of the more expensive attractions in Croatia.
Fort Lovrijenac
Fort Lovrijenac is a freestanding fortress perched on a cliff just outside the western walls of Dubrovnik's old town. Entry is included in the city walls ticket or available separately for a small fee.
Franciscan Monastery Dubrovnik
Home to one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, dating to 1317. The Romanesque cloister is the highlight, with its double columns and garden courtyard.
Gundulic Square
A lively market square behind the cathedral where locals sell fruit, lavender, and olive oil every morning. Free to browse, the morning market atmosphere feels distinctly local compared to the polished Stradun.
Jesuit Stairs Dubrovnik
A baroque staircase connecting Gundulic Square to the Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius, famously used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Lokrum Island
Lokrum is a forested island 15 minutes by ferry from Dubrovnik's old port. The ferry fare is modest and includes the island entry.
Onofrio's Large Fountain
A 15th-century circular fountain at the western entrance to Stradun, originally part of the city's water supply system. Free to see and still functioning, it is the traditional starting point for a walk along the main street and one of the most recognizable landmarks inside the walls.
Orlando's Column
A medieval stone column at the eastern end of Stradun that served as the standard unit of measure for the Republic of Ragusa. Free to see, it stands between the Church of St.
Rector's Palace
The Rector's Palace is a 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace on the Stradun that served as the seat of the Rector of the Dubrovnik Republic, who was elected for a single month and could not leave the building during his term. Entry is paid at a modest price.
Sponza Palace
The Sponza Palace is a 16th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace on the Stradun, one of the few buildings to survive the 1667 earthquake. Free to enter.
Stradun
The Stradun (Placa) is the polished limestone main street running through the center of Dubrovnik's old town from the Pile Gate to the Clock Tower. Free.
