Town in Lithuania

Trakai

2 things to see

Trakai is a lake-ringed town with a red-brick island castle, traditional Karaite pastries, and a near-perfect cheap day trip from Vilnius. Public transport from the capital is inexpensive, and wandering the lakeshore paths and the wooden Karaite streets costs nothing even before you pay to enter the castle. Pair it with the capital and the second city of Kaunas for a budget Lithuania loop, and visit in late spring or early autumn when the lakes are pretty and the crowds thin out.
