Syracuse was once the most powerful city in the ancient Greek world, and today its island old town of Ortigia offers free waterfront walks, baroque churches, and Sicilian seafood at local prices. Wandering Ortigia’s lanes, the Piazza Duomo, and the seafront costs nothing, and the open-air market is a cheap way to assemble a picnic of cheese, olives, and bread. Syracuse sits on the southeastern Sicily route with Catania and Taormina, an easy and inexpensive set of stops by train or bus.
