The Cathedral (built into the columns of a 5th-century BC Greek temple, visible from inside) is free to enter. The Arethusa Fountain (a natural freshwater spring on the waterfront with papyrus plants) is free. Budget travelers walk Ortigia from end to end and see 2,700 years of Sicilian history layered into one small island.

The Neapolis Archaeological Park contains a Greek theater (still used for performances), a Roman amphitheater, the Ear of Dionysius (a limestone cave with remarkable acoustics), and the Altar of Hieron II. Entry is paid at a modest price.
