A Roman city in southern France with one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in the world (Les Arenes), the Maison Carree (a near-perfect Roman temple), and the Pont du Gard aqueduct nearby. Budget travelers find Nimes cheaper than the Provence coast, and much of its appeal costs nothing: the old town and its squares are free to wander, and the Jardins de la Fontaine, one of Europe’s oldest public gardens, are free to enter. Pair it with Arles or Avignon for a Roman-heavy loop, or push on to Marseille for the coast. Spring and autumn bring the same monuments with thinner crowds and lower room rates than high summer.

Maison Carree
A near-perfectly preserved Roman temple from the 1st century BC, standing in the heart of Nimes. One of the most complete Roman temples anywhere.
Pont du Gard
A three-tiered Roman aqueduct bridge spanning the Gardon River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 25 kilometres northeast of Nimes. Walking across the top level and swimming below in summer are free.
