Avignon

3 things to see

Avignon’s massive Papal Palace and intact medieval walls are impressive from the outside for free, and the city makes a great affordable base for exploring Provence. Strolling the walled old town and the Rocher des Doms gardens above the Rhone costs nothing. From here, cheap regional trains and buses reach Nimes and Arles, making Avignon a practical hub for a budget Provence run. Spring and autumn are calmer and cheaper than the busy festival summer.
