Arles is a small Provencal city in France with a Roman amphitheater, strong Van Gogh connections, and a relaxed pace that makes budget slow-travel easy. The old town is free to wander, and tracing the Van Gogh painting spots around the streets and riverside costs nothing. Arenes d'Arles
A remarkably intact 1st-century Roman amphitheatre that still hosts events today. A combined pass covers entry, but the exterior and surrounding streets are free to explore.
Eglise Saint-Trophime
A Romanesque church with one of the finest carved portals in Provence, depicting the Last Judgment. Entry to the church is free; only the cloister has a fee.
Place du Forum
The lively square where Van Gogh painted "Cafe Terrace at Night," with the cafe still recognisable today. Sitting in the square and soaking up the scene costs nothing.
