The birthplace of Francisco Pizarro, Trujillo’s Plaza Mayor is ringed by conquistador palaces built with New World wealth, overlooked by a hilltop Moorish castle. Deep in Extremadura and well off the tourist trail, this is one of the most affordable corners of Spain for soaking up centuries of history. The grand Plaza Mayor and the climb up to the castle walls cost nothing, and meals and rooms run far below Madrid prices. Pair it with nearby Caceres and Merida for a cheap Extremadura loop, and travel in spring or autumn to dodge the fierce inland summer heat.

Plaza Mayor Trujillo
A grand irregular square surrounded by Renaissance palaces built by conquistadors who returned wealthy from the Americas. Free and atmospheric, it is dominated by the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro.
Trujillo Castle
A 10th-century Moorish fortress on the hilltop above town with panoramic views over the Extremaduran plains. A small fee applies, but the walk up through the old walled quarter is free and part of the experience.
Trujillo Old Quarter
The medieval walled upper town climbing from the Plaza Mayor to the castle, with stone palaces and stork-nested towers. Free to wander and largely untouched by mass tourism, it feels like stepping into 16th-century Spain.
