Matera’s ancient Sassi cave dwellings are a UNESCO site and one of the most jaw-dropping free urban landscapes in Europe. Once abandoned, the cave district is now a stunning place to simply wander for nothing, with budget travelers able to sleep in converted cave hotels at reasonable rates. It also pairs well with the rest of southern Italy: the port city of Bari and the trulli town of Alberobello are both reachable by inexpensive regional transport. Spring and autumn bring comfortable walking weather without the harsh summer heat.
