The Sassi are ancient cave dwellings carved into the limestone ravine of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was inhabited continuously from the Paleolithic era until the 1950s when the Italian government forcibly evacuated the population. Free to walk through. The Sassi have been restored into hotels, restaurants, and museums. Budget travelers walk through the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso districts and see one of the most extraordinary landscapes of human habitation in Europe.
