Matera Cathedral sits on the ridge between the two Sassi districts, a 13th-century Apulian Romanesque church with a large rose window and views over the ravine. Free to enter. The interior has been Baroqued but the Romanesque bones remain. Budget travelers visit for free and use the cathedral piazza as the viewpoint from which both Sassi districts are visible.
