Leipzig is one of Germany’s most affordable major cities, with a booming creative scene and low food and drink prices that follow from its cheap rents. The Thomaskirche, where Bach worked, hosts regular free or low-cost church music, and the Spinnerei art complex and the Plagwitz canal district cost nothing to wander. It pairs naturally with Dresden an hour southeast by train, and spring or early autumn dodges both the summer crowds and the winter cold.

The Thomaskirche (St Thomas Church) is where Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor for 27 years and is buried. Free to enter.
