The Unterlinden Museum is housed in a former 13th-century Dominican convent and a modern extension by Herzog & de Meuron, containing the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald, one of the most powerful paintings in Western art. The painting’s depiction of the Crucifixion is so visceral that it was used to comfort plague victims who could see their own suffering reflected in Christ’s.
